The total number of websites found by google with that keyword on the page does not assess you competition. The top 10 sites are your competition. If your plugin assessed the strengths of the top 10 sites or even the top 3 sites then the competition function will be useful. It is not useful to know that 10,000,000 sites have the word dog somewhere on their site. For example a site talking about hot dogs will show up when searching for dog training. In any case if there are only 10 competing sites and they are very strong it will be hard to get in the top 10. if there are 10,000,000 sites and the top 10 are not optimized for the keyword it should be relatively easy to get in the top 10.

First off, this post is extremely thorough! I don’t see too many bloggers going into detail like you have…that’s the mark of a blogger who knows their SEO plugin.
